After fleeing the United States to Bogotá for a week after San Francisco, I rendezvoused with a group of international friends living in Medellín for six days and took it as an opportunity to hang out with international people that are otherwise hard to pin down. I stayed in two different apartments in Poblado, a really nice and also touristy neighborhood of Medellín where my friends had chose to stay. I’ve only been to Medellín once before and as I wrote afterwards it wasn’t a city that I really enjoyed. I hesitate to pass further judgement this time around because I didn’t even set foot outside of Poblado — instead choosing to work and hang out with my buddies rather than venture and explore a city I already decided I dislike. Nevertheless I will pass judgement! I really dislike Poblado. Just about everything about Poblado — from the dense demographic of expats, the meandering roadways with narrow sidewalks on a single side that switch from one side of the street to the other seemingly at random necessitating that you wait for the line of passing cars to give you passage between them so you might again not walk in the road — to repeat the […]

New 2017 Gallery Added

While I was curating my favorite photos from last year I felt sadness. This was a surprise reaction to memories that I positively cherish. 2017 was a chaotic year for me — a lot of transition in both my professional and private life amidst so many different places I found myself. Regardless these photos are proof to myself that I really thrived amidst that chaos. I think that part of the sadness I feel looking through these memories is the fear of not thriving in 2018. In such a way memories of the past can drive us always forward if we allow them. You can see my favorite photos I took in 2017 here.

One year ago, while I was in Lima Peru, I ventured to a shaman in the Peruvian Amazon to drink ayahuasca. I gave a talk in Bogota, Colombia two weeks ago on my experience — what happened. I thought it was important to articulate the details and I recorded my story. If you are interested in hearing it you can listen to that story here.

New 2016 Gallery Added

by Reid Peryam· December 23, 2016· in Content· 0 comments
Looking back at the past year I’ve enjoyed the places I’ve been, the things I’ve done and people I’ve met so much — 2016 was a wonderful year in so many ways. I’ve added a collection of my favorite and most memorable photos from the past twelve months as a gallery you can view here; it will be my intention to work hard to make 2017 as rewarding.

In September I took my camera on a roller coaster ride at Oktoberfest and the results turned out better than I was expecting. I’m a sucker for lines and contrast and these colorful roller coaster tracks scratched an obsessive compulsive itch. It was a lot of fun to shoot rapidly at such a high shutter speed (4000!) – it only lasted about two minutes but the ride felt like a high speed safari. So perhaps adding this collection to the site is more of a way of remembering the experience than the photographs. You can view the gallery here.

My favorite photos to take are of people. Ideally I can photograph someone doing something that reflects their personality. Anytime I feel like I’ve captured an aspect of someone’s style, humor, intelligence, beauty, pride, introspection, or emotion I feel really proud. I think these photographs are so much more interesting than a traditional, “pretty” photo that people generally prefer of themselves because they represent not how that person sees themselves but instead for just an instant — how another sees them. How I see them. I created a collection of portraits I have taken that make me smile and think fondly of the person whose photo I took; you can see that collection here, or from the gallery section of this site. I’ll keep adding to this as I take more photos that make me smile and think fondly of the person whose photo I took.
